2022
INCREASED
FUNDING FOR TRANSPORTATION
Our Union fought for and WON additional transportation funding so that no cuts were made, despite lower ridership due to the ongoing effects of
the COVID-19 pandemic.
House Bill 57 ensures that transportation funding does not decrease in the next academic year due to decreases in ridership. This not only ensures funding for routes, but also funding for drivers and attendants.
IMPROVED BENEFIT PENSION PLANS
Our Union fought for and WON an employer-paid increase to our defined
benefit pension plan.
Senate Bill 36 adds an additional 1% to the ERB from the state (employer).
This will have a positive effect on the fund, ensuring that earned pension
benefits are distributed to educational retirees.
OPPORTUNITIES
FOR RETIRED EDUCATORS
Our Union fought for and WON new pathways for retired educators to
return to work and help ease the educator vacancy crisis.
House Bill 73 provides a mechanism for ERB retirees to return to work for up
to 36-months to help ease the educator vacancy crisis, applying to any ERB
retiree.
HIGHER WAGES FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION WORKERS
Our Union fought for and WON a 7% raise for educational employees and a
$15/hour minimum wage for hourly employees working in public
education.
House Bill 2 provides a 3% salary increase in the Fourth Quarter of Fiscal Year
22 (first full paycheck after April 1, 2022) and a 4% raise in Fiscal Year 23 (first
full paycheck after July 1, 2022). HB 2 also includes funding for a minimum
$15/hour wage for hourly wage earners in K-12 schools.
PAID RESIDENCY PROGRAMS
Our Union fought for and WON a paid residency program for aspiring
educators, ensuring that incoming teachers are not forced to have multiple
jobs while preparing to enter our classrooms.
House Bill 13 provides a paid year of student teaching at $35K for the year.
This paid residency would be available to those who are seeking their teaching
degree/licensure through alternative means, traditional colleges of education,
or those in the Grow Your Own Teachers scholarship program.
HIGHER MINIMUM SALARIES FOR TEACHERS
Our Union fought for and WON significant increases to educators who are on New Mexico’s 3-Tier Licensure System.
Senate Bill 1 would increase tier minimum salaries for teachers in K-12 schools
to $50,000, $60,000, and $70,000 for Levels I-III, respectively.
